BULLSEYE! CELEBRITY DARTS PLAYER STARS AS CADDY RACER MECHANIC
James ‘The Machine’ Wade, the world number 3 darts player, swapped his flights for spanners last weekend to be a visiting mechanic working on the Volkswagen Caddy Racer at Silverstone in the latest segment of the VW Racing Cup.
As an ex-mechanic, James still enjoys getting his head beneath the hood and rebuilding engines, so he was pleased to be offered the chance to perform on the high performance Caddy van in the thrilling atmosphere of a race day.
The Caddy van, with a bright orange color from its sponsor, the RAC, has a 2.0-litre TDI engine which has been modernized to offer over 270 PS, and ready to full racing specification with roll-cage and exposed interior.
Its driver, Simon Elliott, who is also Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: ‘It was lovely to have James as part of the team. The mechanics are all so zealous about keeping the Caddy running at its top ; James fixed in perfectly as he’s used to working under pressure and providing a great result.’
Commenting on his time in the pits, James Wade said: ‘I’m very thankful to VW Commercial Vehicles for offering me this opportunity. I just could not resist the chance to work on the Caddy, and really enjoyed the experience.’
The RAC Caddy van will be in action again at the new round of the Volkswagen Racing Cup at Snetterton on 29 and 30 August, then 25 and 26 September at Brands Hatch and the last round of the season at Donington Park on 16 and 17 October. Full details are available at www.vw-cup.co.uk.
Uncovered in September 2003, and making its public debut the following month at the RAI Show in Amsterdam, the newest Volkswagen Caddy van went on market in the UK on 15 March 2004.
