Is it illegal to drive car if you personally don't have car insurance?

Let's say a teenager doesn't have car insurance and he has his license. His car is registered in his parents name and the teenager isn't under the family car insurance. The teen drives his car and gets wrecked in a accident. Now will he be protected because the car is under his parent's insurance and they let him use the vehicle?
So technically you can only borrow a friend's car if there car insurance policy allows it?
thanks it makes sense now

You don’t have to have insurance to Borrow someone’s car. The CAR must be insured. (And the insurance policy must allow the owner to grant permission for others to use the car… but MOST policies do this)
HOWEVER you can’t barrow a car from someone at the same residence. So the teen can’t "barrow" the parents car. unless the teen was living on his own. Otherwise the teen must be listed as a driving on the cars he/she has access to within the same residence.
Only if you get caught
No! You must be listed on the insurance or the insurance must cover all drivers!
So long as the car has insurance, you’re good.
As for as whether or not the teenager is protected in your example, it depends on the insurance policy.
If you get pulled over and you don’t have any insurance, then you get a ticket for it.
Getting new auto insurance is a no brainer way to save your money. You can get a simple estimate online they usually give you lots of quotes.
