Most insurance companies run both your driving record, and your credit record. If yours is not good and you are a risk, they may ask for the full amount up front.
If your credit is good, it may indeed be because of the FR44 filing. The insurance company is required to notify the state if you drop your insurance, so they may want to limit their liability to the state.
How long do I need to keep an FR44 Filing?
As long as your insurance policy is in force (active), your FR44 should remain valid. If your policy should be canceled at any point while you are required to have an FR44 on file, your insurance company will notify the appropriate authorities. If you fail to maintain the appropriate filing, you driving privileges may be suspended. It is very important to keep the proper filings in place. Rules may vary by state.
Statewide Insurance has other alternatives for an FR44. You can go online to http://fr44quote.com or call 888-929-2467.
Are they threatening to cancel you if you don’t? I wouldn’t worry about it unless they say they will cancel you(which they probably won’t). I think it would be to your advantage if possible since they add processing fees to a monthly payment plan. Plus you are less likely to cancel in the middle of a 6 month plan if you have already paid in full. If you do lapse in your payments and they cancel you, I believe the DMV will make you pay yet another fine in order to retain your license. gl
